About

It all started with Nancy Drew. No, the Bobbsey Twins… or was it the Boxcar Children? I don’t remember anymore, but I still love to read mysteries. Since I read them all the time anyway, I decided to start writing about them, too. I review mystery/thriller movies as well.
Things you should know about me: My name is Karen Russell, and I’m on the faculty of a major public university in the southeastern United States. I’ve been blogging on Teaching PR since 2006, and I’m a wife and mom of a 7-year-old girl. No matter how busy I get, I always have time for a mystery.
As an academic, I used to be the book review editor of a media history journal, and I’m now the editor of another academic journal. Reviewing mysteries is all for fun.
Things you should know about this blog: I don’t finish a book if I don’t like it, and I don’t review books I didn’t finish. Life’s too short to read bad books! So, the reviews that I post are about books I’ve actually read or movies I’ve seen from beginning to end and have something positive to say about. I accept review copies from publishers but will always give my honest opinion about what I read, and I’m an Amazon.com associate, which means I’ll make a few pennies if you click through and buy a book. (Let’s just say I won’t be quitting my day job.)
I hope my reviews help you find good mysteries to read and watch, too.

Hi Karen,
I’m commissioning digital versions of my books so I can put them up as Kindle versions outside of North America.
The latest, “Every Bitter Thing”, went on sale, in hard cover in December.
I see you’re going Dorte’s Global Reading Challenge.
If you have an e-reader, and might want to consider it for your South American read, I’d be happy to send you a copy.
All I would need is an email address — and a specification as to whether you’d like it in Epub or Kindle.
Best Regards,
Leighton

Oh, would’ve loved to read your book for the challenge, but I don’t have an e-reader. This might just be the push I need to invest.
Thanks for the offer, Leighton.

Hi Karen,
Well, it’s not ideal, but you can always download one of the Kindle Apps from Amazon.com – or go the Epub route by downloading the free Mobipocket reader.
But I don’t think I would, if I were you.
It’s not a pleasant way to read.
Personally, I resisted e-readers until I got one for Christmas.
But, now, I”m a convert.
If you go over to the Dark Side anytime soon, just let me know.
And I’ll have a file off to your straightaway.
L.

I think I’ll hold out for the real thing, but you’ll be the first to know when I get one!
