I have to agree. This book left me cold and unsatisfied. I found the story a bit unbelievable. Why would she even talk to that guy after what he did to her? Please! I read this book while I was in Italy and had nothing else to read. Otherwise, I probably would not have finished it.

Indeed, what was the mystery?

I have not really seen her that way either, perhaps because I have enjoyed the mix of crime and archaeology so much. I am really looking forward to this one, and your review has not exactly made it better :)

Bernadette, she especially made me mad in the first book when practically everyone she knows was involved in some manner of murder or mayhem and she just never noticed. Ugh. But I'm terribly jealous of you for already reading the fourth one!

I don't remember Ruth being whimpy in the first two books - but then I can barely remember what I did yesterday at the moment so what do I know? I do love this series though and and have already read the fourth book which is very good...not quite my favourite (which is number 2 THE JANUS STONE) but very good all the same.

Aww, thanks, Joan! And Foyle's War -- they could've dragged out the series a little more, don't you think? I mean, some war years only had a few episodes.

I just love your reviews!! I haven't heard of this series and I'm delighted to skip the first two books because, like you, I don't like wimpy protagonists. Thanks so much for doing this. BTW, Foyle's War is one of my all time favorite PBS series.

Thanks for commenting, Phil! The underlying humor is definitely one of the strongest parts of this series. Sasha gets into some serious issues, as you say, but not in a way that drags you down.

This is a great story. There are serious elements, but I love the underlying humour. Jill is a very talented writer and I think we'll all be looking forward to Sasha's next set of experiences. I particularly liked the idea of her being distracted when she was so close to getting a 'slave' to do her laundry!

Yes, and she's got a fourth one on the way, Frisky Business (I think it's called). Toronto makes a great setting for this series -- it's almost another character.
